What is the VA disability compensation scale?

The VA disability compensation scale is the official system used by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to determine how much monthly tax-free compensation a veteran receives for service-connected disabilities. This scale is based on disability ratings that range from 0% to 100%, in 10% increments, reflecting the severity of your condition and its impact on your ability to work and function in daily life.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

How the VA Disability Compensation Scale Works

  • Disability Ratings: The VA assigns a percentage rating to each service-connected condition based on medical evidence and how much the condition impairs your ability to function.
  • Combined Ratings: If you have multiple conditions, the VA uses a combined ratings table, not simple addition, to calculate your total disability rating.
  • Higher Ratings = Higher Compensation: The more disabling your condition, the higher your monthly benefit.

Additional Compensation for Dependents

If you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents, your monthly payment increases. For example:

  • A 100% disabled veteran with a spouse and child could receive over $4,000/month.
  • You can also receive aid and attendance benefits if you need help with daily living.

What Conditions Qualify for Compensation?

You must have a condition that:

  • Is connected to your military service (injuries, illnesses, or conditions that began or worsened in service).
  • Has a current diagnosis with documented impact on your physical or mental functioning.

Can Disability Ratings Be Increased?

Yes—if your condition worsens or you develop new related health issues, you can:

  • File for an increased rating
  • Submit updated medical records
  • Request a re-evaluation from the VA
