Filing for VA disability benefits can be a life-changing step, but understanding the timeline helps set realistic expectations. The VA disability claim process involves multiple stages, and the total time it takes can vary depending on the complexity of your case, the type of evidence needed, and how quickly the VA can review your information.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Typical Timeline for a VA Disability Claim

While every claim is unique, here's a general breakdown of the VA disability claim timeline:

  • Initial Filing
Once you submit your claim (either online, by mail, or in person), the VA will acknowledge receipt.
    Timeframe: Within a few days
  • Evidence Gathering and Review
The VA begins gathering evidence, which may include service treatment records, private medical records, and any other documents you submit. You might be asked to
attend a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam during this stage.
Timeframe: 30 to 60 days (can vary)
  • VA Review and Decision
After collecting the evidence, a VA representative reviews your case and makes a decision based on the severity of your condition and its connection to military service.
    Timeframe: 90 to 120 days
  • Claim Decision Notification
    The VA will send a
Rating Decision letter outlining whether your claim was approved or denied, and what your disability rating is (if applicable).
Timeframe: Within a few weeks of the decision

Total Estimated Time: On average, 100 to 180 days, but some claims take longer, especially if there are multiple conditions or missing information.

Factors That Can Delay a VA Claim
  • Missing or incomplete medical records
  • A need for additional exams or evaluations
  • Filing for multiple conditions at once
  • High volume of claims being processed at the VA

To avoid delays, ensure that your application is complete and supported by clear medical evidence from the start.
