Purpose of a VA Compensation Exam

The exam helps the VA:

• Determine if your condition is service-connected
• Evaluate the current severity of your disability
• Decide on a disability rating, which affects how much compensation you receive

What to Expect During the Exam

• The exam may be performed by a VA doctor or a VA-contracted provider
• You may undergo a physical examination, answer questions about your symptoms, and discuss how the condition affects your daily life and ability to work
• You don’t receive treatment during this exam—it’s strictly an evaluation

How to Prepare

• Bring any relevant medical records that aren’t already in the VA’s possession
• Be honest and detailed about your symptoms—don’t downplay or exaggerate
• Discuss how your condition affects your routine tasks, work, relationships, or mobility

What Happens After the Exam?

• The examiner writes a report and sends it to the VA
• The VA uses the report to help determine:
• Whether your condition is linked to your military service
• The appropriate disability rating
• The amount of compensation you're eligible to receive

You won’t get results at the exam, but you can check your claim status through VA.gov.
