Many veterans wonder whether they can receive both VA disability compensation and military retirement pay. The answer depends on your specific situation, including your disability rating and the type of retirement you receive. Here’s what you need to know.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
Concurrent Receipt: When You Can Receive Both
In certain cases, veterans are eligible for Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay (CRDP). This allows you to receive both VA disability benefits and military retirement pay without an offset—meaning one doesn’t reduce the other.
You may qualify for CRDP if:
- You are retired from the military (20+ years of service or medically retired)
- You have a VA disability rating of 50% or higher
If you meet these criteria, your retirement pay and disability compensation will be paid concurrently and in full.
Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC)
If you don’t qualify for CRDP but your disability is combat-related, you might be eligible for CRSC, which is a tax-free benefit that can restore part or all of your retired pay that was previously offset by VA disability compensation.
Eligibility typically requires:
- A combat-related injury (as verified by the military branch)
- Being retired from military service
- Receiving VA disability compensation
What If You Have a Disability Rating Below 50%?
If your VA rating is below 50%, and you're receiving regular military retirement pay, your VA disability compensation is usually subtracted from your retirement pay. This is often referred to as the VA offset, and it can reduce your total monthly payment.

In this case, you're still receiving the same total amount, but a portion is tax-free (the VA part), which could lower your tax liability.
